Digestive Enzymes | 7 Enzymes with Betaine HCl & 8 Botanicals | Vegan, UK-Made

Seven enzyme preparations, eight botanicals, and every activity unit printed on the label.

The enzymes — with the numbers that matter

Milligrams tell you very little about an enzyme. What matters is activity, measured in its own units, and most labels never show it. Ours does, for every one:

  • Amylase — 45mg, providing 2250 SKB
  • Protease 4.5 — 10.8mg, providing 540 HUT
  • Lipase — 6.6mg, providing 330 units
  • Protease — 4.78mg, providing 23.9 HUT
  • Bromelain — 3mg, providing 6 GDU
  • Papain — 0.15mg, providing 0.3 USP units
  • Protease 3 — 0.03mg, providing 48 HUT

Betaine hydrochloride 145mg per capsule, providing 110.58mg of betaine — again, both figures, because they are not the same number.

Eight botanicals

421mg turmeric root providing 20mg curcuminoids, 50mg alfalfa, 30mg apple cider vinegar, and 20mg each of caraway seed, chamomile flower, fennel seed, ginger root and peppermint leaf.

Taken with your meal, not before it

1 or 2 capsules with each main meal, which is what our label says and what the format is designed around.

Please read the cautions in the How to take it tab before ordering.

Suitable for vegans. Made in the United Kingdom to GMP standards. 90 capsules, covered by our 60-day money-back guarantee.

Modern life takes. We give back — naturally.

Ingredients

Each capsule provides:

  • Turmeric Root — 421mg* (providing 20mg curcuminoids)
  • Betaine Hydrochloride — 145mg (providing 110.58mg betaine)
  • Alfalfa — 50mg
  • Amylase — 45mg (providing 2250 SKB)
  • Apple Cider Vinegar — 30mg
  • Caraway Seed — 20mg · Chamomile Flower — 20mg · Fennel Seed — 20mg
  • Ginger Root — 20mg* · Peppermint Leaf — 20mg
  • Protease 4.5 — 10.8mg (providing 540 HUT)
  • Lipase — 6.6mg (providing 330 units)
  • Protease — 4.78mg (providing 23.9 HUT)
  • Bromelain — 3mg (providing 6 GDU)
  • Papain — 0.15mg (providing 0.3 USP units)
  • Protease 3 — 0.03mg (providing 48 HUT)

* = equivalent weight from extract. SKB, HUT, GDU and USP units are the standard measures of enzyme activity — they tell you far more than the milligram weight alone, which is why our label carries both.

How to take it

Take 1 or 2 capsules with each main meal, or as advised by a health professional. Do not exceed the recommended daily intake.

With the meal rather than before it — that's what the label specifies. At 90 capsules per pot, that's around a fortnight if you take two with three meals a day, or considerably longer if you use it only with larger meals.

⚠️ Please read before ordering

  • Do not take this product if peptic ulcers are present. This is printed on our label — the formula contains betaine hydrochloride, which is acidic.
  • Contains bromelain (from pineapple) and papain (from papaya). Relevant if you react to either fruit, and both have recognised interactions with blood-thinning medication.
  • If you take any medication, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or have a medical condition, consult your doctor or pharmacist before use.

Food supplements should not be used as a substitute for a varied and balanced diet.

How do our enzymes compare?

An enzyme label quoting only milligrams cannot be compared with anything. Our 2026 buyer's guide explains the activity units — SKB, HUT, GDU — that make a genuine comparison possible, and the six checks worth making. Read the full UK enzyme comparison →

Before you Buy

The questions we hear most — answered straight.

Plant-Based Digestive Enzymes supplement bottle by The Health Improvers
Is this suitable for vegans?
Yes — our label states it, and the capsule shell is hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) rather than gelatine. Two of the enzymes come from fruit: bromelain from pineapple and papain from papaya. The protease is vegetable-sourced, as stated in our ingredients list.
When should I take it?
1 or 2 capsules with each main meal, or as advised by a health professional — with the meal rather than before it. That's what our label specifies, and it's the instruction the format is built around.
What is betaine hydrochloride?
It's an acidic salt form of betaine, a compound found naturally in beetroot and wheat. There's 145mg per capsule, providing 110.58mg of betaine — we declare both figures because they aren't the same number and the difference matters when you're comparing labels. Note that it is acidic, which is why the label says not to take this product if peptic ulcers are present.
Why does it smell of vinegar?
Because there's apple cider vinegar powder in it — 30mg per capsule — and it carries its own distinct scent. Nothing has gone wrong with the pot; it's simply an ingredient you can smell.
Does it contain gluten?
None of the ingredients are gluten-containing cereals — the carrier is stoneground brown rice flour. However, our label does not carry a certified gluten-free claim, which under UK rules requires testing to below 20mg/kg. So if you have coeliac disease we'd rather you contacted us before ordering than relied on us saying yes here.
