Fruiting body and mycelium are two different fungal structures; neither word is a complete quality score. The important commercial distinction is often whether a mycelium ingredient is separated from its growth medium or sold with grain substrate still present. Compare that information with the species, powder or extract weight, beta-glucan method and daily serving.
Quick label rule: “fruiting body” is useful composition information, but it does not automatically mean effective. “Mycelium” is not automatically poor quality, but mycelium-on-grain should identify the retained substrate.
What is the fruiting body?
The fruiting body is the reproductive structure produced by many fungi—the cap, stem, bracket or cluster that people normally recognise as a mushroom. It can be dried as powder or processed into an extract.
What is mycelium?
Mycelium is the branching vegetative network through which a fungus grows. Pure cultured mycelium is fungal material and can contain compounds of interest. Some research preparations use mycelial material, so it should not be dismissed solely because it is not a fruiting body.
What is mycelium-on-grain?
Commercial mycelium is often cultivated on rice, oats or another cereal. If the colonised grain is not removed before drying and milling, the finished ingredient contains both fungal biomass and substrate. Starch from that substrate can contribute materially to the product’s weight and carbohydrate analysis.
The clearest labels identify mycelium and the substrate rather than calling the whole ingredient simply “mushroom”.
Why the rule does not fit every fungus
Not every commercial fungus is supplied as a familiar cap-and-stem mushroom. Chaga products usually use a sterile conk or sclerotial mass. Cordyceps products can use cultivated fruiting structures or mycelial material. Species and preparation therefore matter more than a universal slogan.
Beta-glucans and alpha-glucans
Fungal beta-glucans are structural cell-wall carbohydrates used as analytical markers. Alpha-glucan or starch measurements can help show whether substantial cereal substrate is present, although modern methods have limitations and formulation ingredients can complicate results.
A beta-glucan percentage is useful composition data—not proof of a health effect. Ask what test method was used and whether the result applies to the raw ingredient or finished supplement.
Why “polysaccharides” is less specific
Beta-glucans belong to the broad polysaccharide family. A “total polysaccharides” percentage can also include other carbohydrates and should not be read as a beta-glucan percentage. Product comparisons should keep the two terms separate.
How should extract ratios be read?
A 10:1 ratio generally means ten units of starting material were used to make one unit of extract. It does not establish the beta-glucan amount, does not prove that one extract is better and does not mean ten times the effect.
Check whether the prominent milligram figure is actual extract weight or a starting-material equivalent. Equivalent-weight numbers can be useful, but they should not obscure the amount physically present in the serving.
Organic certification and testing
Organic certification concerns qualifying production, handling and labelling practices. It does not replace contaminant testing. Likewise, a “third-party tested” statement is useful only when the seller can explain what was tested, against which specification and whether the result relates to the finished batch.
A practical label checklist
- Exact common and scientific species names.
- Fruiting body, pure mycelium, mycelium-on-grain or another fungal structure.
- Any retained growth substrate named in the ingredients.
- Powder or extract and the actual amount per serving.
- Extract ratio or equivalent-weight wording explained clearly.
- Beta-glucan percentage and analytical method, where declared.
- Polysaccharides not presented as synonymous with beta-glucans.
- Pack duration and daily cost at the label directions.
How our product fits this checklist
Our Organic Mushroom Complex declares five species and individual weights per capsule: shiitake 130mg, chaga 80mg, maitake 80mg, reishi 65mg and lion’s mane 20mg. The current product label describes all five mushroom ingredients as fruiting-body material.
It does not currently declare an extract ratio or beta-glucan percentage, so we do not present those as strengths it has demonstrated. Its other distinguishing information is Soil Association organic certification and 71mg organic acerola supplying 12mg vitamin C.
What health claims may be made?
There is no authorised GB health claim for the mushroom species discussed here. “Fruiting body”, “mycelium”, “10:1” and “30% beta-glucans” are composition statements; they do not authorise promises concerning focus, immunity, sleep, energy or treatment of a condition.
Where a qualifying vitamin or mineral is present, any authorised claim must be clearly attributed to that nutrient. In our formula, the permitted claims come from vitamin C.
