You will read a lot in this corner of the industry about “natural” vitamin C being superior to “synthetic”. We sell a fruit-derived one, and we are not going to make that argument, because it is not the honest one — and the honest one is more useful to you.
Start with what is the same
The vitamin C in an acerola cherry and the vitamin C in a white tablet are the same compound: L-ascorbic acid. Your body treats them identically, because they are identical.
So if someone tells you synthetic vitamin C is “not recognised by the body”, you have learned something about that seller. Ascorbic acid is well absorbed, thoroughly studied, and it is the form used in most of the research that established what vitamin C does.
That is the floor. The interesting question is what sits on top of it.
What the source genuinely changes
1. How it feels to take
Ascorbic acid is, as the name says, an acid — and high-dose acidic tablets are where most complaints of stomach discomfort in this category come from. Fruit-derived vitamin C arrives in a fruit matrix that is far less acidic.
For a lot of people this is the whole decision. If you have tried a 1000mg tablet and found it uncomfortable, a gentler fruit-derived capsule at a sensible dose is very often the thing that works — and the one you keep taking. A supplement you tolerate beats one you abandon.
2. It arrives as part of a fruit
A fruit extract is more than one compound. Acerola is one of the richest natural sources of vitamin C there is, and what you get is the concentrated fruit rather than an isolated powder.
We will be careful here, because this is where the category overclaims. Those other plant compounds carry no authorised health claims in Great Britain, so nobody may tell you what they do — and words like “cofactors” and “synergy” are usually doing exactly that job by implication. What we can tell you is what is in the capsule and how much. That is the difference between a claim and a fact, and we would rather give you the fact.
3. The dose it suits
Fruit can only be concentrated so far, so fruit-derived products land at moderate doses rather than megadoses. As it happens, that is where vitamin C works best anyway — absorption falls away as the dose climbs, and most of a 1000mg tablet ends up in your urine. A fruit-derived capsule sits comfortably in the range your body can actually use.
The label check that separates the good from the vague
Whichever you choose, one test tells you whether a fruit-derived product is well made: can you do the arithmetic?
A good label gives you both figures — the weight of fruit extract, and the percentage of vitamin C in it. Ours says 500mg of acerola cherry standardised to 25% vitamin C, which gives 125mg, or 156% NRV. Two numbers, one sum, and you can verify it in your head.
A label saying only “acerola extract 500mg” is quoting the weight of the fruit and leaving you to assume the rest. Those are very different quantities, and the ambiguity is never in your favour.
The other check: is there added ascorbic acid in a product sold as whole-food? It is common and entirely legal, but if you are paying for fruit-derived vitamin C you should know how much of it is. Ours has none — the vitamin C is the fruit's own.
Which to buy

Whichever bottle it comes from, vitamin C contributes to the normal function of the immune system and to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue. The source does not change that. What it changes is whether the pot is still going in three months.
