Liver-support supplements tend to feature a familiar set of ingredients. Here's an honest guide to what they are — and, as always, the important distinction between a nutrient with an approved health claim and a botanical named for its traditional use. (For the wider context, start with our liver health basics guide.)
The one with a genuine approved claim
- Choline — this is the ingredient that matters most, because it's backed by authorised health claims: choline contributes to the maintenance of normal liver function and to normal lipid (fat) metabolism. If a liver formula is serious, choline at a meaningful level is what you want to see.
Traditional botanicals (named for traditional use, no approved claims)
These have long associations with liver wellness in traditional herbalism, but do not carry authorised claims:
- Milk Thistle (silymarin) — probably the most famous "liver herb," with centuries of traditional use and a lot of ongoing research interest.
- Artichoke — a traditional bitter, long associated with digestion and the liver in European herbalism.
- Dandelion — another classic traditional bitter herb.
- Beetroot & Turmeric — colourful, nutrient-rich plants popular in modern liver blends.
An ingredient to check on: NAC
Some liver formulas include NAC (N-acetyl-cysteine). It's worth being aware that NAC's status as a food-supplement ingredient has been the subject of regulatory discussion in the UK, so it's a genuine "check the details" ingredient — a responsible brand will be transparent about it.
What to look for on the label
- Choline present at a meaningful amount — this is the ingredient carrying the approved claim.
- Botanicals named honestly — for traditional use, not credited with medicinal effects.
- No "detox / cleanse / flush" language — your liver detoxifies itself; that wording is a marketing red flag, not a benefit.
- UK manufacture to GMP standards, named amounts, and clear allergen/suitability info.
Putting it together
A well-built liver formula leads with choline for its genuine approved role, and adds traditional botanicals like milk thistle and artichoke for a broader, plant-led blend — without pretending to "detox" anything. That's the approach behind our own LIVERenew. For the fundamentals, read our liver health basics, and for a comparison of what's on the UK market, our Best UK Liver Supplements 2026 guide.
